Detail Library – New Details September 2026
House Extensions BLOG

On the Detail Library, this month we published the second set of passive solar shading details, focusing on sliding and folding shutter systems across a wider range of configurations and opening types.

Where Set 1 covered fixed fins, brise soleil, roller shutters, and a single lifting/folding shutter, this set explores the full variety of sliding and folding shutter mechanisms — from compact single-track surface-mounted panels through to large multi-panel systems — and introduces solar shading in the context of lift and slide door openings as well as windows.

DL531–533 cover three shutter configurations for window openings in masonry cavity walls: a large sliding/folding shutter with vertical battens that oversails the facade when open, a four-panel sliding/folding shutter with horizontal battens that stacks to one side, and a single-track surface-mounted sliding shutter.

DL534–536 apply similar principles to lift and slide door openings, with more detailed context including flat roof, beam and block ground floor, and threshold construction. These three details show recessed single-track, recessed two-track, and surface-mounted variants side by side, making it straightforward to compare the implications of each mounting approach for the wall build-up and cavity width.

Details included in this set:

  • Large sliding / folding solar shutter – masonry 150mm cavity brick wall with mixed tilt and turn window (elevation, section, plan)
  • Four panel sliding / folding solar shutter – masonry 150mm cavity brick wall with mixed tilt and turn window (elevation, section, plan)
  • Surface mounted sliding solar shutter – masonry 150mm cavity brick wall with mixed tilt and turn window (elevation, section, plan)
  • Recessed in-line two-panel horizontal sliding solar shutter – masonry 150mm cavity wall with lift and slide mixed door (elevation, section a, section b, plan)
  • Two track horizontal sliding solar shutter – masonry 150mm cavity wall with lift and slide mixed door (elevation, section a, section b, plan)
  • Surface mounted in-line two-panel sliding solar shutter – masonry 150mm cavity wall with lift and slide mixed door (elevation, section a, section b, plan)
