Learning new skills with SourceCAD
I recently signed up for an online course to learn how to make dynamic blocks. I have always seen the benefit of using dynamic blocks, as a great time saver, but never got around to learning how to do it myself.
The course from Jaiprakash at TheSourceCAD is excellent. His tutoring is clear and well thought out. I would highly recommend any of his courses if you are looking to improve your AutoCAD skills.
So, I have now put together my first dynamic block. It’s nothing fancy – but hopefully it will be useful!! Scale bars are a constant head ache for a lot of people, so hopefully these scale bars will make life a little easier. They are at scales of 1:50, 1:100, 1:200 and 1:500. All you need to do is insert the block into your drawing in the paperspace, (not model space) so that you can use the scale bar on your layout sheets. Being the first dynamic block I have created, I’m sure there is room for improvement, so if you have any suggestions I would be happy to hear, and if you want me to make any changes to them I can do so!
Feel free to download this dynamic scale bar block, completely free. Enjoy!

It’s great
I’ve downloaded the file, but the only scale on there is 1:100. I need 1:50 arghhhh!
Hi Josie, this is a dynamic block so there are a number of different scales including 1:50. You need to use the drop down grip point on the scale bar to select the scale you wish to use. You must make sure you insert the block correctly, and do not explode it as you will lose the dynamic settings. So, go to insert block reference and insert that way, rather than copy and paste. Hope that helps.
thanks! but I just got the 1:100 too even though I inserted as block. We see the other scales as soon as we chose them from the drop down menu, and then they pop up in block edit but when we close ref/block edit (and try to save), all we have access to is 1:100.
Hi there Tessa, Could you let me know what version of AutoCAD you are using and what operating system you are on. It would also be helpful if you could send a couple of screen shots so I can take a look. Drop me an email emma@firstinarchitecture.co.uk and we can get it sorted 🙂
Hi, I’m using AutoCAD architecture 2020 and trying to insert the 1:50 black. How do I go about inserting it so it is to scale on my title block page? thanks!
Hi Laura,
Insert the block into your drawing, using the insert=>Insert block command. Either do this directly while in your paperspace, or copy and paste it from model space to paper space. When in your paperspace, explode the block to get rid of the extra text. Then select the scale using the dynamic scale bar grip point. Let me know if you get stuck. Emma
Hey there! I have the same issued. I download the file and only show scale bar 1:100 AutoCAD architecture 2020.
Hi! Could you try this…. open a plain drawing, then go to insert, and insert the dynamic block into the drawing. It should then appear with the dynamic grips for you to change the scale bar to the desired scale. Let me know if this works for you. 🙂
I absolutely love this! Any chance you have one with 1:1250?
Hi Gabriela, I’m afraid I don’t – sorry! Next time I work on the dynamic scale bar I’ll make sure I add the 1250!
This is awesome and works fine.
