So, the challenge begins….

What exactly do you have to sketch?

Anything and Everything! A sketch a day (more if you want to).

Sketch your living room while you are watching TV. Sketch your TV. Sketch the street while you are waiting for the bus. Sketch the view from your window at home, at work, at uni, at college, in a cafe. Sketch people, sketch trees. Practice, practice, practice.

So this week is all about getting into the swing of the task ahead. Make an effort to sketch when you can, at least once a day.

Does it have to be in pen or pencil?

Draw in any medium you like. In future weeks we will look at exploring different methods and styles, but to start with, use whatever you have to hand.

Check out our Sketch Challenge pinterest board to get loads of inspiration, ideas, techniques, styles.

Try different techniques. For this week think about:
  • Tone
  • Colour
  • Shape
  • Texture
  • Detail
  • Form

Discover your style

I also found this great video from Alphonso Dunn – Pen and Ink Drawing tutorial – how to create realistic textures. Great tips, be sure to take a look!

Next week we will look at new techniques and styles to use in your architectural presentation and design process. I will share more videos too.

Send us your sketches so we can share them – inspire each other so we can complete the challenge together. Email us at or find us on Facebook or Twitter. #FIAsketchchallenge
